Bulk Group Operations
Group membership is managed from the Jira users screen of the Advanced User Manager console. You can add or remove one user at a time from a row's ... menu, or select many rows and use the floating selection bar that appears at the bottom of the screen.
You need Jira administrator permission. Without it the console shows empty lists rather than an error, which can look like a bug.
Open the Jira users screen
Open the app's admin console. It opens on Overview.
In the left sidebar, under MANAGE, click Jira users.
The status control above the list is set to Active by default, so deactivated accounts are hidden until you switch it to Inactive or All. If a user you expect to see is missing, check this first.
Add users to groups
On Jira users, find the people you want with the Search by name or email box and the Active / Inactive / All control.
Tick the checkbox on each row you want to change. A selection bar appears at the bottom of the screen showing how many users are selected.
Click Add to group in the selection bar.
The Add to group(s) drawer opens and lists the site's groups as chips. Click each group you want; selected chips are highlighted with a tick. Click a selected chip again to unselect it.
Click Add to groups to apply. The drawer closes and the change is confirmed with a message telling you how many users were added to how many groups.
The drawer has no search box. It shows the groups Jira returns to the app's group picker, which on sites with a very large number of groups may not be every group. If a group you need is missing, add the users in Jira's own group settings.
Remove users from groups
Select the rows you want on Jira users, exactly as above.
Click Remove from group in the selection bar.
The Remove from group(s) drawer opens and loads the groups the selected users are currently in. Only those groups are listed - you cannot pick a group nobody in the selection belongs to, so the list is usually much shorter than the full site group list.
Click the groups to remove the users from, then click Remove from groups.
Removing a group can remove product access. If the group is what grants a Jira, Confluence or Service Management licence, the affected users lose access to that product as soon as the change is applied. There is no undo - to reverse it, add the group back.
When you select several users at once, the drawer lists the combined set of groups those users belong to, so a group may apply to only some of them. The removal is applied only where the membership actually exists. If the drawer says This user is not in any groups or These users are not in any groups, the selected people have no group memberships to remove.
Change a single user
On Jira users, click the ... menu at the end of that user's row.
Choose Add to group or Remove from group.
The same drawer opens, scoped to that one user. Pick the groups and apply.
Shortcut: click the group count in a user's Groups column (tooltip View or remove groups) to open the remove drawer for that user directly.
Good to know
Group operations apply to Jira users only. The External users screen has no group actions - external users are not Jira accounts.
Every add and remove is written to the activity log, which you can review in Recent activity on Overview. The entry counts the users and groups you selected; check the result message if some changes may have failed.
Group changes are unrelated to activating or deactivating an account. Removing every group does not free the licensed seat on its own; use Deactivate for that.
Selecting rows also enables the other bulk actions in the same bar: Properties, Deactivate and Export. Export writes a CSV of the current selection only.
