Smart Fields

"Smart Fields" is a very powerful custom field that becomes easier to use as you get more familiar with it. You will create these fields using https://developer.atlassian.com/cloud/jira/platform/jira-expressions/. It provides you with more freedom and allows you to create fields for any scenario that comes to mind. You can create five different types of Smart Fields. These are as follows:

  • Smart Datetime Field: displays results of a given jira expressions that evaluates to a date time.

  • Smart Group Field: displays results of a given jira expressions that evaluates to a group.

  • Smart Number Field: displays results of a given jira expressions that evaluates to a number.

  • Smart Text Field: displays results of a given jira expressions that evaluates to a text.

  • Smart User Field: displays results of a given jira expressions that evaluates to a user.


Please remember that you need to have Jira Administrator permissions for the user you are using to configure and create Smart Fields.


Create Smart Fields


  1. Go to IssuesCustom fields

  2. Click on the Create custom field button located in the top right corner.

  3. Select All and one of the Smart Fields, and click Next.

  4. Add a name and add a description if you want, and click Create.

  5. Associate field your field to the appropriate screens, and click Update.


Configure Smart Fields


  1. Go to IssuesCustom fields

  2. Find your field and click on the three dots located at the far right of your field's row.

  3. Click Context and default value.

  4. Click on the Edit custom field config option located at the bottom of the screen.
